Understand the Hip Replacement Procedure

The hip joint is made up of two bones, thigh bone or femur, and pelvic bone. The thighbone has a ball-like structure that fits into the socket-like structure in the pelvic bone. In the case of hip joint replacement or hip arthroplasty, either one or both parts can be replaced. So, Hip replacement can be partial or complete. In a partial hip replacement, only a part of the hip joint (only the ball of the thigh bone) is replaced with the artificial implant that is known as a prosthesis. In the case of complete hip replacement, both the parts of a hip joint are replaced with artificial implants.

First of all, you will be taken to the operation theater and anesthesia will be given to you. Anesthesia can be general (given through an oxygen mask) or it can be epidural (given through the spine).
After that, an incision is made on the hip area and the bone is exposed.
The head of the femur (ball-like structure) is removed and an artificial implant is placed. It is then attached firmly either with or without cement.
In the case of total hip replacement, the part of the pelvic bone is shaved and a socket-like structure is attached to it.
Then the orthopedic surgeon (Dr Abhishek Mishra) will check the movement of your hip joint. It should be smooth and unhindered.
After checking the movement, the incision is closed with surgical glue.
You will be then sent to the recovery room and to your room thereafter.
