First of all, general anesthesia is given to the patient. An incision is made in the breast as per the type of breast surgery to be performed. Lumpectomy may take just half an hour while total mastectomy can take 1 hour or so. It depends upon the type of breast surgery being performed. After that, the dressing is applied and the patient is taken to the recovery room. Lumpectomy patients can get discharged the next day post-surgery while some major surgery patients like mastectomy patients may have to stay at the hospital for a few days before discharge.
