  • Blood in Urine, frequent urinary tract infections, and heaviness in the abdomen can be felt but these symptoms can be due to prostate enlargement as well.

How Prostate Cancer is diagnosed?

  • PSA – Prostate-specific Antigen or PSA should not be more than 4ng/ml. If it is more than that then further testing is required.
  • Prostate Biopsy – If the PSA is on the higher side then a prostate biopsy is performed to find out the prostate cancer. The tissues from the prostate are taken under the guidance of an ultrasound probe. This probe is inserted into the rectum and a needle will take various tissue samples. The procedure is performed with anesthesia to make the process as painless as possible. You may feel a little discomfort though. The tissue samples are then examined in the lab to find the cancer cells.
  • Digital Rectal Examination – The urologist will feel the prostate after inserting a gloved finger in your anal area. The feel of the prostate also gives an idea about prostate cancer.
  • Diagnostic Imaging such as CT scan, MRI, PET scan and bone scan, etc are also performed if the prostate cancer is detected in biopsy results. These scans are performed with any contrast medium or dye to find out the spread of prostate cancer in the body.
