What are the Symptoms of Kidney Cancer?

Kidney cancer is not a very common cancer in India that’s why you need an experienced urologist for treatment. The best kidney cancer treatment options range from active surveillance to surgery and immunotherapy. Only one type of treatment suffice in the early stages of kidney cancer but in the advanced stages, a combination of therapies is advised. The renal cell carcinoma or kidney cancer can spread to nearby lymph nodes and to other organs if not treated well in time. It spreads to other organs faster in advanced stages. Surgery is the best treatment for kidney cancer along with supportive treatments. If you are looking for the best kidney cancer doctor in Delhi, then book an appointment with Dr Vineet Malhotra here

Kidney cancers don’t show any symptoms in the early stages that’s why they are often detected accidentally in the early stages.

  • There can be blood in the urine
  • There is flank pain that radiates to the back on the same side
  • Unexplained or extreme Weight loss
  • Loss of Appetite
  • High Blood Pressure and fever
  • A swelling or a mass may be felt in the abdomen
  • The patient feels tired all the time

How is the Diagnosis done?

  • Kidney cancer is discovered accidentally in the early stages when an ultrasound or any other diagnostic imaging test is performed for some other purpose. As kidney cancer doesn’t produce any symptoms in the early stages.
  • Other than Ultrasound and MRI, blood tests, urinalysis, and biopsy are performed to check for the spread of cancer and determine the stage.

Quick FAQs about Kidney Cancer Treatment

If diagnosed in early stages then kidney cancer is comparatively easier to treat. It is hard to treat in advanced stages and more than one treatment measure needs to be carried out.

With advanced treatment measures and combination therapies, the rate of recovery is good when kidney cancer is diagnosed in the early stages. The survival rate of kidney cancer patients is improving now.

Yes, the kidney tumor is removed entirely by either laparoscopy or open surgery. Laparoscopy is the preferred method because it is a minimally invasive treatment and offers faster recovery.

If the kidney cancer is in the initial stages then it spreads slowly but it spreads faster in advanced grades.

Understand the Oncology Treatment Procedure

  • Partial Nephrectomy – If the kidney cancer is detected in the early stages then partial nephrectomy is performed. In this surgery, only the tumor of the kidney is removed. The quality of life of the patient doesn’t get affected much and the patient recovers faster.
  • Nephrectomy or Radical Nephrectomy – It is the removal of the cancerous kidney operatively. Radical nephrectomy involves the removal of the entire kidney. It may or may not be accompanied by the nearby lymph nodes or adrenal glands etc. It depends upon the spread of cancer. Radical Nephrectomy can be done either laparoscopically or by open surgical procedure.

Non-surgical Treatment Options for Kidney Cancer

  • Radiofrequency Ablation – It is a treatment for those patients who can not go through the surgery because of age or any other serious health issues. A needle is inserted into the kidney and the tumor cells are destroyed by giving an electric current to it. The patient is sedated for this procedure so it is not uncomfortable for the patient.
  • Targeted Antiangiogenic Therapy – In this therapy, some antiangiogenic medications are provided to the patient which target the blood supply of the tumor. The idea is to stop the blood supply of the tumor thereby making it shrink and become inactive.
  • Immunotherapy – In immunotherapy therapy, the body’s immune system is boosted to help fight cancer and increase the survival rate of the patient.

A combination of these treatments is given to kidney cancer patients based on the spread of cancer and overall health conditions.
