How are Kidney Stones Diagnosed?

Kidney stones are diagnosed through a combination of methods. Initially, a doctor takes a detailed medical history and conducts a physical examination to assess symptoms and signs of kidney stones. To confirm the diagnosis and determine the size and location of the stones, imaging tests are commonly used, including CT scans, ultrasounds, and X-rays. Urine and blood tests may also be performed to assess kidney function and identify substances that contribute to stone formation, such as calcium or uric acid.

What are the symptoms of Kidney Stones?

Severe pain, known as renal colic, is a common symptom, typically felt in the side or back and radiating to the lower abdomen and groin. Other symptoms can include blood in the urine, frequent urination, and pain during urination.

How are Kidney Stones treated?

The treatment of kidney stones depends on their size, location, composition, and the severity of symptoms. Small stones may pass naturally through the urinary tract with increased fluid intake and pain management. Medications can be prescribed to alleviate pain and facilitate stone passage. For larger stones or those causing severe symptoms, various medical procedures are available. These include RIRS or flexible ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy, percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL), or surgery.
