Knee Joint is made up of three bones, the shin bone (tibia), the thigh bone (femur), and the patella (knee cap). When a person suffers from arthritis then the knee joint starts deteriorating. This leads to degeneration in the bones of the knee joint. Knee Replacement is then performed in order to replace the damaged joint surfaces. It can be either full or partial. In the case of partial knee replacement, only the most damaged side of the knee joint is replaced. However, in the case of full knee replacement, the whole joint along with the base of the kneecap is replaced.
First of all, you will be taken to the operation theater and anesthesia will be given to you. Anesthesia can be general (given through an oxygen mask) or it can be epidural (given through the spine).
After that, an incision is made on the knee area and the bone is exposed.
The bone surfaces are then shaved to create a smooth surface for the metal implants. After that, the metal implants are either cemented or fixed on the joint surfaces.
The base of the patella (kneecap) may or may not be replaced depending upon the condition of the patient.
In the end, a spacer is inserted in between the two joint surfaces to allow smooth movement.
Then the orthopedic surgeon (Dr Abhishek Mishra) will check the movement of your knee joint which should be smooth and without any hindrance.
After checking the movement, the incision is closed with surgical glue.
You will be then sent to the recovery room and to your room thereafter.
