X-ray and preoperative blood tests are performed before surgery. The x-ray is then taken post-surgery as well. This helps in knowing the placement of the implant and the success of the knee replacement surgery.
Knee replacement surgeries are performed in patients who are above 50 years of age in most cases. In some rare cases of trauma or other genetic disorders, knee replacement is performed in young patients as well.
You can walk the next day after surgery. You will have to take support of a walker or cane during your recovery process.
The surgery is performed in anesthesia so you won’t feel any pain. You can feel some pain during the physical therapy sessions which are normal and will go away when you start walking normally.
Yes, You can live a normal life, walk without support, climb stairs, join work and perform your daily activities as well.
Knee Joint is made up of three bones, the shin bone (tibia), the thigh bone (femur), and the patella (knee cap). When a person suffers from arthritis then the knee joint starts deteriorating. This leads to degeneration in the bones of the knee joint. Knee Replacement is then performed in order to replace the damaged joint surfaces. It can be either full or partial. In the case of partial knee replacement, only the most damaged side of the knee joint is replaced. However, in the case of full knee replacement, the whole joint along with the base of the kneecap is replaced.
First of all, you will be taken to the operation theater and anesthesia will be given to you. Anesthesia can be general (given through an oxygen mask) or it can be epidural (given through the spine).
After that, an incision is made on the knee area and the bone is exposed.
The bone surfaces are then shaved to create a smooth surface for the metal implants. After that, the metal implants are either cemented or fixed on the joint surfaces.
The base of the patella (kneecap) may or may not be replaced depending upon the condition of the patient.
In the end, a spacer is inserted in between the two joint surfaces to allow smooth movement.
Then the orthopedic surgeon (Dr Abhishek Mishra) will check the movement of your knee joint which should be smooth and without any hindrance.
After checking the movement, the incision is closed with surgical glue.
You will be then sent to the recovery room and to your room thereafter.
When you are under the care of such an experienced orthopedic surgeon like Dr Abhishek Mishra, complications are highly unlikely. However, some complications that may arise in knee replacement surgery patients are infection, any issue with the implant, blood clot, pain, etc. These complications are quite uncommon when you are under the care of an experienced joint replacement specialist, Dr Abhishek Mishra. Don’t forget to inform the hospital if you notice any fever, chills, swelling, or discharge from the surgical site.
Rehabilitation after knee replacement surgery is very important for a full recovery. You will be having physical therapy sessions during your stay in the hospital as well. You will be advised to take physical therapy sessions at home too.
As there are the latest and high-quality implants available now so the recovery is faster and the patient is able to do all the activities without any difficulty.
